These are some of the warning signs of an abusive relationship. If you answer yes to ANY of these questions, it's time to take action:

•Are you afraid to say "no" or to disagree with your partner?
•Does your partner criticize you constantly?
•Do you make excuses and apologize for your partner's behavior?
•Does your partner blame you or others for every problem or for his own mistakes?
•Have you ever been hit, kicked or pushed by your partner?
•Have you been forced to have sex?
•Is your partner jealous of time you spend with your friends and family?
•Do you have to explain everything you do, every place you go and everyone you see or talk to?
•Does your partner constantly call to check up on you when you are at work or visiting with friends or family?
•Does your partner threaten to hurt you, your children, or other family members?
•Does your partner throw things, damage or destroy property and possessions, abuse or threaten to hurt pets?

What you can do to help yourself:

1. Understand that you are in a very serious situation that only escalates over time.
2. Call to speak with an advocate or a counselor. You can go here for 24-hour assistance or for guidelines on
how to help a friend or family member you believe is in trouble.
3. Tell someone you trust about your situation (family members, friends, a domestic violence counselor, etc).
4. If you are in immediate danger, call the police.

Help Stop Domestic Violence
One cause that's especially close to my heart is Domestic Violence. It's a problem that does tremendous damage to families, especially women and children, and is often kept hidden because of fear and shame; if not stopped, the cycle of abuse only continues. Do you have a teenager who is of dating age? Are you a woman who is uncomfortable or afraid in her relationship? If so, it's important to be aware of the signs of dating and relationship violence, which don't just involve physical voilence, but can also be solely verbal and/or emotional violence.
